Laboratory software / Sample lifecycle

One sample.
A connected journey.

I developed a custom QR-based laboratory system that tracked a sample from the moment it arrived, through movement between machines, until its results were posted.

Project workflow walkthrough

Follow the sample lifecycle.

Select a stage to see how it fit into the system.

Stage 01 / Lab arrival

Start the lifecycle at intake.

The tracking workflow began when a sample arrived at the laboratory, establishing the starting point for its journey through processing.

01 / The laboratory problem

A sample passes through more than one station.

Arrival, processing, transfers between machines, and result posting are different stages of the same sample’s journey. The tracking system needed to keep that journey connected across the laboratory workflow.

02 / What I developed

QR codes as the bridge between sample and system.

I built custom software that used QR codes to follow laboratory samples from intake through processing and result posting. The system tracked machine-to-machine movement as part of the sample lifecycle, connecting the stages within one workflow.

03 / Why the design mattered

Continuity from arrival to posted results.

The value came from connecting the stages: the physical sample, its movement through laboratory equipment, and the final posting of its results belonged to the same tracking process. Staff could follow the sample’s progression across the workflow instead of treating each station as a separate event.
